The New Hyundai Palisade: Proof you can still get more than you pay for

The new Hyundai Palisade at Rowe Hyundai in Westbrook, ME defies the expectations you might have when you see its affordable price tag. This is one of those rare midsize SUVs that gives you more than you bargained for. The interior has that nice, luxurious feeling, there's plenty of space for people and cargo, and the V6 engine delivers a healthy amount of power when you need it. Let's take a scenic tour.

To keep things simple, every model in the Palisade lineup uses the same powertrain. That means you'll be packing the punch of a V6 engine that delivers 291 horsepower, and the Hyundai Palisade will be rolling smoothly through its eight-speed transmission. The engine runs quietly enough that you could easily start thinking you're driving a luxury car instead of a family-friendly SUV.

When you're driving on the highways around South Portland or Saco, ME, you'll notice the Hyundai Palisade passes big semis without much exertion. But that doesn't mean fuel efficiency is underwhelming. This model can get up to 26 miles per gallon on the highway with the base model and up to 24 highway miles per gallon with all-wheel drive. Getting performance doesn't have to mean sacrificing economy.

The steering is firm, and the Hyundai Palisade gets through tight turns without making everybody feel they're about to slide out the doors. The suspension is so well-orchestrated you won't shake up your passengers when you travel over rugged pavement. One other unexpected strength: When equipped properly, this new Hyundai Palisade can tow as much as 5,000 pounds.

Hyundai is winning a lot of hearts these days by putting upscale materials and tasteful design inside vehicles that don't have an arm-and-a-leg price tag. The new Hyundai Palisade is a good example. Yes, the interior looks good but it also sounds good as you travel along highways leading to Portland or Lewiston, ME. The cabin is so well-insulated you start to forget about outside road noise because you just don't hear it.

Now let's spend a moment on many peoples' pet peeve: Car tech systems trying so hard to be tech-y that normal human beings can't operate them. You won't run into that issue on board the new Hyundai Palisade. Instead, you'll run into the welcome familiarity of simple knobs and buttons that work easily instead of creating a constant distraction. Even the two touchscreens are intuitive and quick to respond.

The standard touchscreen is an easily-readable 8 inches, and there's an even larger 10-inch version available. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ come standard in a wireless form so you can operate your smartphone apps with your voice while your hands stay on the wheel and your eyes stay on the road. Just ask the system for audible directions or tell it to play your favorite music and request that the volume be turned up very loud.

Would you like to make the new Hyundai Palisade even a little fancier and even more entertaining? There are some excellent ways to do that. For example, opt for the Harman Kardon premium stereo with the dazzling 12 speakers. Upgrade to wireless charging so everybody can recharge their devices at once, without internal turf wars. Consider a sunroof or dual sunroofs, dual-zone climate control and the convenience of remote start.

The new Palisade may be a midsize SUV but inside, it feels like it's large-economy size. In its base setup, the Hyundai Palisade can seat as many as eight people in three rows. Even if you want captain's chairs in the second row, it can still seat up to seven. The first and second rows are especially generous when it comes to space, allowing everyone to sit comfortably. The third row is a little more compact but still provides enough room.

Of course, you also want room for inanimate objects like groceries or luggage or your camping gear. The Hyundai Palisade offers it with 18 cubic feet behind the third row, 45 cubic feet with the third row folded and 86 cubic feet with the two back rows folded down flat. All of that can be helpful on road trips heading out of Augusta ME or wherever you happen to live.

The most prominent national safety organization conferred its approval upon the 2022 Hyundai Palisade with its highest honor: An overall safety rating of five out of a possible five stars. Standard safety features include a rear view camera to help you see what's behind you as you back up, along with rear parking sensors to help detect what you might miss with just the camera.

If you ever face a situation where a potential collision in front becomes more probable, there's an emergency braking system that can forcefully brake for you to help you avoid the crash altogether. A special cruise control system teams with a forward-facing camera to keep an eye on the vehicle in front of you and help maintain a safe following distance. There's even a system that can gently steer you back into your lane if you start veering out of it.
