2019 Hyundai Elantra shown.

You've probably seen a lot of new compact cars around Westbrook, sedans that look, act, and feel like all the rest. Hyundai Elantra is no such everyday four-door.

It's loaded with advanced driver aids to keep you and yours secure on the road, from pedestrian detection, blind-spot, rear cross-traffic, and attention warning systems, and smart cruise control to safe exit assist. Its safety commitment's comprehensive here.

Moreover, it's exceedingly comfortable, with up to 95.8 cubic feet of passenger room home to your choice between premium cloth and leather seats, optionally heated up front. That's not to mention the trunk. It's roomy for a day trip, measuring 14.4 cubic feet.

It's even top-notch when it comes to today's tech. 5-, 7-, and 8-inch infotainment systems, optional navigation, available wireless device charging, elective eight-speaker Infinity premium audio, and SiriusXM and HD Radio are all testaments to that.

So, now that Hyundai Elantra is back for a new 2020 model year, and with all these great features, what could possibly have changed?

  • For one, Hyundai got rid of the six-speed manual transmission option, choosing instead to focus on upgrading from a six-speed auto to a Smartstream IVT. The result? Super fuel economy up to 31 mpg here in Westbrook, 41 mpg on highways like the Maine Turnpike, and 35 mpg combined between them, according to the EPA.
  • Secondly, Hyundai made Idle Stop & Go standard on the Eco trim. Not only can it auto-shutdown the engine during stops and restart it again when it's time to go. It can also help reduce gas consumption and emissions. Bring that DCT in Eco into the mix, and the bump in fuel efficiency is palpable: you can achieve up to 33 mpg, 41 mpg, and 36 mpg respectively.
  • Third, the SE trim got a ton of new standards. They include dual auto temp control, a 3.5-inch driver info cluster, forward collision-avoidance and lane-keep assist systems, and a driver attention warning feature.
  • Finally, you can choose among five new colors: Shimmering Silver Pearl, Fluid Metal, Stellar Silver, Portofino Gray, and Calypso Red.
